Signs That You May Need Whole House Repiping

Plumber-working-on-pipe

Do you know how old your plumbing system is? Chances are that if you’re new to your home, you don’t know this—it’s often not revealed in home inspections and it’s not a popular topic among new homebuyers—but it probably should be!

The fact of the matter is, if your home was build in the last 30 years or more, and the plumbing system has never been replaced, then you might need to explore the idea of repiping, which is when a portion or even the whole home has its plumbing pipes replaced.

But how do you know if you really need this service? Are there signs to watch out for?

We’re glad you asked! Yes, there are absolutely signs to watch out for that indicate you’re in need of whole-home repiping. Read on to learn what they are.

The Age of Your Home/Plumbing System

We mentioned this in the intro—but a key indicator of a home that may need repiping now, or at least soon, is the actual age of your home and its plumbing system. Pipes do have an expiration date, just like anything else.

The older your plumbing system gets, the more likely it is to suffer from rust and corrosion, leading to pinhold leaks or even bigger leaks. How long a plumbing pipe lasts depends on the materials it is made out of, but generally speaking, you should probably consider at least having your pipes inspected once they’re over 50 years old.

If you live in an older home, then you should have our professional plumbers examine the system to ensure that the pipes are in good shape!

Piping Material

One of the main reasons that people opt for whole-house repiping is because they want to have pipes of a different material put in. Plumbing pipes have been developed from many different types of materials over the years. Some of these materials just are not long-lasting, or could even be harmful to your health and the health of your household (think, lead pipes!)

If you were to discover that a significant portion of the piping running through your home was made of lead, after all, you’d probably want to have everything replaced as soon as possible, right? Or you might even choose to proactively upgrade to a more reliable plumbing material, like iron or copper.

If you’re unsure of whether or not your home really does need repiping—partial or whole-home—the best thing you can do is give our team a call. We’ll use video pipe inspection to take a look at your plumbing system and tell you what kind of shape it’s in, and can make the proper recommendations from there.

We may find that your plumbing is still in good shape, or made of newer materials than you ever thought. But it’s far better to find this out from a pro, than to find out that your plumbing system is aging and leaky after you’ve already had a messy and highly inconvenient leak in your home!
