Yes, You Can Boost AC Efficiency Yourself!

There aren’t a lot of things HVAC pros will tell you that you can do yourself when it comes to servicing your comfort control system. And the fact of the matter is that for big repairs, this is mostly true—particularly since there are some components of HVAC systems that professionals need special training and licensing for. This includes substances like refrigerant and natural gas, in the case of a furnace.

That said, professional maintenance is important. In fact, it is vital to the overall performance and efficiency of your air conditioner. It allows our technicians to thoroughly inspect your air conditioner for problems, anything that needs adjusting, and anything that needs to be cleaned. It also allows you to get repairs on your schedule right away so they don’t turn into bigger emergencies later on down the line. But, back to how you can boost efficiency by yourself…

First, Raise the Thermostat Temp

“Wait, what do you want me to do? You want me to make it hotter? During the summer?”

Alright, hear us out!

We do not expect you to make your home hotter than it needs to be. However, there is a good chance that you’re turning your thermostat settings down much lower than you actually need to in order to maintain comfort. Some homeowners, for instance, have their thermostat set as low as 71°F, when actually, most people are perfectly comfortable at about 78° throughout the day. Additionally, you can save energy and subsequent money by raising the temperature when you aren’t home, or while you’re sleeping.

There is no need to waste unnecessary energy by cooling a home that you aren’t using, or by lowering the temperature far more than you actually need to.

Utilize Your Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans can’t keep you cool on their own. That is, they can’t actually lower the temperature of the rooms they are in. However, they can help you feel cooler, by helping sweat evaporate from your body—our natural way of keeping cool.

On a mild day, a ceiling fan can be sufficient to keep you cool and keep your bills lower, but on a warmer day when you need to use your air conditioner, ceiling fans can help by pushing cooled air down, and keeping warm air rising.

Therefore, paring your ceiling fans with your central air conditioning system allows you to run that AC system at a higher temperature, thereby lowering your monthly energy costs.

Change Your Air Filter Regularly

The air filter that came with your air conditioner upon installation gets clogged up over time with dust and debris. This makes it more difficult for the air to circulate through your home, making it harder for your air conditioner to keep you cool. As a result, your system may malfunction or freeze up as a result. Be sure to change your air filter every 1-3 months to avoid this problem.

How often you change it will depend on the type of air filter and the level of contaminants in your home. Please don’t hesitate to contact our team for guidance. Many times, an air filter can get by a little longer than you might think.
